From all restaurants I visited during my trip to Yogyakarta, RM Bu Ageng was the most exciting restaurant to write a review for. Firstly, we were tired from a 5-hour walk under the sun, so we were glad to sit and eat at this nice restaurant. Secondly and most importantly, almost everything about this restaurant was good. The place was dominated with wooden interior that was set up neatly. It got some outdoor lighting while the high roof and the fans kept the place cooler. The place was clean enough for us.RM Bu Ageng restaurant interiorWe were interested in their nasi campur and durian desserts. They offered six nasi campur varieties: with (1) Shredded grilled chicken, (2) Fried catfish, (3) Beef lung, (4) Beef tongue, (5) Lamb in coconut milk, and (6) Beef stew in coconut milk. The price ranged at 20k – 25k/portion. We ordered one portion with Beef lung and another with Beef tongue. We also ordered Durian Bread Pudding (or Bubur Duren Mlekoh) and Iced Coconut Durian drink (Es Kopyor Durian).Nasi campur contained sides of omelette, shredded meat, spicy fried potato chips, chili sauce (sambal kutai), salted fish, and cracker (somewhat similar to beef skin cracker), aside from the main meat we ordered. Our beef lung and beef tongue were tender. The side dishes tasted good as well. I liked the spicy fried potato chips and the chili sauce (sambal kutai) the most. The nasi campur was satisfying. We recommend this dish, but we doubted the authenticity of Jogja culinary in this; it was a resemblance of Balinese nasi campur.Nasi campur with beef lung (paru), 22kNasi campur with beef tongue (lidah), 25kThe durian bread pudding contained white bread cubes and little durian meat dipped in durian-flavored water with coconut milk and palm sugar. It arrived warm to our table. The palm sugar made the taste rather special, but it was too sweet to our liking. We’d also love to have more durian meat in the desserts.Durian bread pudding (Bubur duren mlekoh), 9kThe iced coconut durian drink contained shaved ice, coconut meat, durian meat in coconut milk and palm sugar. We loved this drink better than the durian bread pudding since it was more refreshing (note the hot temperature in Yogya), had more durian & coconut meat, and had the right sweetness of the distinctive palm sugar. The ice coconut drink (Es kopyor durian), 22kOur total bill came to 83k for the two of us from a starvation to full belly. Similar to other restaurants in Yogyakarta, RM Bu Ageng did not have a separated smoking and non-smoking sections, so choose your seats accordingly if you are picky about it. continue reading
