This traditional food stall on Tambak Bayan Street has been there since my mom and dad was still a little kid, trying to spell both of my grandparents name. So, you could imagine how long is the history of Nasi Campur Tambak Bayan, right?
It’s been a really long time since the last time I ate Nasi Campur Tambak Bayan. So that’s why I want to eat this right now, and I take away my order.
Nasi Tambak Bayan - IDR 21,000

I must admit that the price of Nasi Tambak Bayan is really pricey. For that IDR 21,000, don’t expect that you’ll get beef meat, or even chicken meat. That price is only for boiled egg, Balinese tofu, and some brown mee-hoon, and chilli sauce.

The main characteristic of Nasi Tambak Bayan is that brown mee-hoon. A lot of restaurant has been trying to “copy” that brown mee-hoon, but never taste as good as the ones that Nasi Tambak Bayan has. That Balinese tofu though, super good! I’m more into “Tempe girl” but I do love the taste of the tofu! In Indonesia, they said “Bumbunya benar-benar merasuk!”
Ambiance
The restaurant is kinda dark, because I think they’re facing directly to the sun. That's why the condition is like a backlight in camera. I don’t feel that comfortable in eating inside of the restaurant, so that’s why I prefer to take away my order. However, the condition of the restaurant was much better, considering in the past, they don’t have any restaurant, they just sell the Nasi Campur on the street. Two thumbs up, what a great accomplishment!
Service
Because this could be said as a traditional small restaurant near the street, so you can’t expect a great service. Sorry to say, but I think the service is a bit “Arrogant” in a some way. The waiter will not serve you with smile, and they just say “Ya, apa lagi?” then you just need to tell what exactly you want. Well, I think it’s because of years and years serving thousands or even millions type of customer. At some point, you could get bored and like to think nevermind, as long as they have a great dish, that’s all they need.
Stay awake for another food journey!

One of the best thing in Surabaya is its food street. Surabayanese is kinda different from Jakartanese, or even any other parts in Indonesia. We love something “old” and traditional. Yes, we love food that’s introduced by our parents, even great great grandparents. It never changed until now.
I must admit that traditional Surabayanese food does taste good, especially the food street. Even though they run through several generations, they still maintain the taste and it’s still deliciously unresistable. Right now, I want to introduce one of my mom’s favorite street food in Surabaya – and also my fave, actually – around Ondomohen area, which is Sate Klopo or Kelapa, which means a coconut satay in English.

Sate Kelapa is basically a beef satay that’s topped with peanut and ketchup gravy, plus coconut sprinkles on top. A lot of people love it because it’s rare to find a beef satay – with coconut, especially – here in Surabaya.
10 Tusuk Sate Kelapa - IDR 22,000

With the price and the portion you’ll get, which is 10 tusuk of sate kelapa, I personally think it’s a really good price. It’s a beef meat, and beef is super pricey, right? Taste really good, freshly grilled and you could smell the yummy peanut sauce. Best served while hot, so you might want to eat it fast! What I love the most that this one served on a leaf, feels like more natural and earthy in a some way.
Ambiance
This is a street food. So you don’t expect a very luxurious place to eat. You need to eat inside of the small stall, or even just stand there on the street. It’s super crowded, whether it’s in the morning or in the evening. Get ready to wait patiently! If you don’t like to queue, then come early in the morning and make a take away order, so you could eat it at home, just like me ;)
Service
It’s all self service, I think. You need to race and shout your order to all women who grilled the satay. You also need to find your own place to sit – if you’re eating there – and just be patient waiting for your satay.
Stay awake for another food journey!

Traditional Snacks To Try! Smile Aug 15, 2015

Categories : Stand / Kios | Halal

If you’re going to Surabaya, then the number one place that you should visit is Pasar Atum. Why is that so? Because Pasar Atum is the home of the greatest snacks, cooks, and even traditional food of Surabaya. You could find lots of Surabayanese - Chinese food here. One of my favourite stall in Pasar Atum is Kartika Jajan Pasar. They have 2 main areas here in Pasar Atum.

The first one is in the old Pasar Atum ( Pasar Atum Lama), on the 3rd Floor, so you’ll need to hop on the escalator twice. The second one is located also on the 3rd floor, near a Bakery and shoes shop, in the new pasar Atum ( Pasar Atum Baru ). The second stall is smaller than the first one. So if you want to have a cozy seats for nongkrong, then the first stall is the best option.
All of the stalls are open space, so you could see other Pasar Atum visitors while enjoying your snacks. Keep in mind though, Kartika doesn’t sell heavy meal. They just sell traditional Indonesian snacks like Lumpia, Ote-ote, Kucur, and others with a delicious taste (in my opinion). So yes, let’s review 3 of my favorite snacks & drink here!
Lumpia Goreng - IDR 12,000

Just who on earth doesn’t love Lumpia Goreng? It’s a deep fried lumpia skin (the one that you use to make siomay) with some fillings inside. Usually it consists of Rebung, beansprout, and some vegetables. In Kartika, you could taste meat inside.
Lumpia Basah - IDR 12,000

It’s the opposite from Lumpia Goreng, this one is boiled, but with the same fillings.
Sinom

The best Indonesian traditional beverages in my version is Sinom! Drink it when still cold, and you’ll get refreshed by the taste.

Ambiance
Since this is a traditional food stall, I really love the design because it’s super traditional. They also use a traditional “Baki” to take your order.
Service
I don’t know, because Kartika is always full of people, the waiter almost never smile to the guests. They move and speak like a robot, answering the questions like a machine. Sadly but yes, that’s the tipical service you’ll get here in Surabaya if the place already famous.

Lontong Mie is known as one of the traditional food in Surabaya and in Indonesia. I think if this is your first time going to Surabaya, or you’ve gone to Surabaya but never tried the traditional food here, then it’s the time to try one! There are surely lots of Surabayanese food that you shouldn’t miss!
One of the most famous Lontong Mie food stall is located in Pasar Atum. If you’re following my blog post or food posts here, you must know that Pasar Atum is one of the malls in Surabaya. It has 2 main places, which are the new Pasar Atum and the old one.

Lontong mie Ny. Maria is located on the 2nd Floor of Pasar Atum Old Mall. Just take the escalator once, then continue straight until you see some food stalls, and then you’ll spot a sign Lontong Mie Ny. Maria. This place is always crowded, so prepare for queue!
Lontong Mie - IDR 15,000

Basically, Lontong Mie consists of a black soup (this is made mainly from Terasi or shrimp paste, mixed with some shrimp water, and also mashed garlic), yellow noodle, shrimps, and some dried tofus.
If you’re allergic to seafood, then surely you can’t eat this. The portion of this lontong mie is not really big. You might need to eat 2 portions, or else just eat 1 portion, so you could try other food inside Pasar Atum Mall.
Sate Kerang - @IDR 1,500

The best side dish while eating Lontong Mie is Sate Kerang. Even though the colour is not that good, it taste so fluffy and flavourful. One is never going to be enough!
Es kelapa – IDR 20,000
After eating lontong mie, you might need to refresh yourself by ordering es Kelapa at this stall. There es kelapa colour is somehow green, maybe they’re using green syrup as the base. However, I think their price for this es kelapa is kinda pricey, because the taste is not that nice – it’s like a plain water with coconut)

Ambiance
It’s super crowded, hot (no air-con) and the place isn’t that neat.
Service
Because they’re serving lots of people, don’t expect a high quality service. One thing for sure, relax because they won’t forget your order.

In love with the very cute design of this place and also their stunning menu, we decided to have a tea here.
Well, you know, because I love to ask question first before ordering something,
First, I have a chit chat with one of the waitress there, asking about their display menu in front of the shop, what cake will I get, can I choose the cake or not, and so on.
The waitress is really friendly. She always answer my “super lots and annoying” question with smile, hahahaha.
Guess what?
Lucky me, they’re having 50% discount for the high tea!!
(A package for 2 persons, consist of 1 tea kettle, 2 beautiful cups, and 3 traps of cakes as seen on my picture below)

After lots of question, in the end I said that
“Iya nih mbak, saya mau duduk di sofa yang itu tuh, tapi gimana ya itu masih ada orang. Kalau sy reserve terus ntar balik bisa ga ya?”
and then The waitress still answer nicely
“Oh, orang yang disana udah minta bill kok, kalau mau duduk aja dulu gpp, ntar dipindahin semuanya kalau orangnya sudah pergi.”
Whoa, really nice service!
Unfortunately, the waitress there is not so skilled in taking picture. I ask them to take a picture for us, but the picture isn’t that good. But it’s okay though.
Tea & cakes

Super love the Tea!
I ordered the Lady Alice Tea, and it smells really really nice with a nice taste also! You didn’t have to add sugar again into your tea, is already sweet (yes, as sweet as me ;p)

Cakes

The Red Velvet and the little sandwich is so-so, I found it weird when I ate the sandwich with green powder on top of it. I should have eat those first, haha.
I love the Lumpia (yes, this is not a cake, I know, but consider it as a cake right now) and the samosa. Really yum! A little bit oily though.
Also the chocolate and lemon pudding (or is it creme brûlée for the lemon one?) Cold and Yummy yummy!
The macaroons, apple pie are also tasty!

Concept
Totally in love with the concept of having a high tea!
Makes you feel like a lady ;)
Maybe Lady Alice should develop or dive into the concept deeper, because somehow it’s a high tea, yet it feels like a usual tea. It’s in the middle.
Ambiance
Because the location is outdoor, I don’t really like it. If the surroundings is garden, then I’d love to have it an outdoor.
But if it’s located inside the mall, it should be inside a room, surrounded by glass and without any other noise (Noise that come from the restaurant is okay, but at that time there’s a super loud music concert down the mall, and it’s super annoying)
Price
50% discount makes me said the price is worth it and really affordable!
You only need to pay for IDR 145,000 (Tax already included) for 2 persons!

Stay awake for another food journey!
