One of the most legendary Kwetiau restaurant in Surabaya. No matter what the time is, in the morning, afternoon, evening, or even late of night until their closing time at 11 p.m, Kwetiau Apeng is always crowded with people. Every Surabayanese must know about this legendary place.

Believe it or not, this is my very first time to go and try Kwetiau Apeng. My father is a person who doesn’t like to queue, that’s why we never eat here. Yeah, finally I tried this restaurant *Thanks to my relatives that come to Surabaya*.
When I arrived, I pick the queue number, and it’s number 30 – now is still number 18 – crazy right? To my surprise, the queue is not that long, and the customers eat really fast.
Kwetiau Siram Ayam – IDR 41,000

The most famous menu here in Kwetiau Apeng is their Kwetiau Siram. You could order this one without MSG, but the taste is a bit plain then the usual. Taste great, there are prawns inside, and really warm. I love to eat this with soy sauce & chopped chilies.
Kwetiau Goreng Ayam – IDR 38,000

I don’t know why, but I prefer the fried kwetiau instead the kwetiau siram. For me, this is more flavorful. Even though it said kwetiau goreng ayam, but you could find seafood inside like prawns. The portion is big enough to share with 2 person.
Nasi Goreng – IDR 38,000

Taste a bit plain – seriously – and not recommended. Only the lapchiong taste great. You need to eat this one with chili sauce to get more flavor.
Service

The service is super fast but the waiter is not friendly at all. She just want to take your order as fast as possible without even explaining anything. Even though the place is crowded, I think it’s better if the waiter is friendlier than this.
Ambiance
It’s super crowded and it’s a true family restaurant. If you’re super starving or want to enjoy your time while eating, then this is not the place. The sitting area is not that spacious, the table arrangements are only fit for 5 – 6 people.

Tristar is one of the most affordable, traditional, old - style Chinese restaurant in Surabaya and has a very delicious food. I love to eat at Tristar, and listen to the Chinese song sang by the singer from Tristar. There are lots of old Chinese people went here to have dinner together, or even grab a drink.

Package for 10 person –IDR 1 Mio ++
Yes, because I just graduated and want to celebrate my graduation day, I order a package menu that consist of 6 main meal, 1 dessert, and free flow Soft Drink. With 1 million ++ rupiah for the price, and remember this is for 10 person, don’t you also agree it’s super affordable?
Sup Asparagus

For the opening, we order Sup Asparagus. It also consists of crab, which makes it even tastier. I usually eat sup asparagus with “Cabe rawit and kecap asin”, you’ll find it on your table.
Burung Dara Goreng

I really love to eat Burung Dara, and one of my favorite restaurant to eat Burung Dara is Tristar. Ini nih, kecil-kecil cabe rawit! So delicious, finger licking good!
Risoles Udang

Taste crispy on the outside, but very tender in the middle. I love the prawn’s taste. You need to eat it with the dipping sauce (maybe, it’s sambal?) to get more flavor to this dish.
Tahu Enoki

They use Tahu Jepang or Tofu in this meal. The tofu taste super delicate, easy to chew, and the tofu melts in the mouth.
Koloke

Delicious! I always order a Koloke if I went here. Taste good and they use chicken’s breast, so I think it is healthier rather than the other part of chicken.
I Fu Mie
Sorry, I couldn’t take the I Fu Mie’s picture since I’m out for a moment to go to the bathroom. After I came back, yeah... all of the I Fu Mie were almost gone by half. That’s why I’m not taking picture of those.
Of course, I still eat it at home! Taste delicious, but for me they should add more salt in the seasoning moment.
Service
Two – or maybe four, if I could raise my feet’s thumb! – up for the service given by Tristar. The waiter there are very attentive and they always change our plate into the new ones everytime we finish eating. Not only that, our glass are always full. All of the waiters are friendly and I think they love to smile!
Ambiance

There’s no special occasion like a wedding when I went here, which is good. The space is spacious, and even though it’s a regular day they have lots of customers. A great place with grandma, grandpa, colleagues, or even parents.

In Surabaya, there are lots of traditional restaurants that become a must try and visit restaurant in Surabaya, and also their existence could not be forgotten from the local food industry in Surabaya. One of my favorite local restaurants and also a Chinese food is Pangsit Mie Jagaraga.

Even though the location is not in the middle of the city, and the size of the restaurant is also small, but it’s located near my house and my family always love the taste!
Mie ayam, pangsit dan bakwan

When I eat Mie or noodle, I’ll always order the complete menu, because I really want to try anything! So Mie Jagaraga has chicken, some won ton / pangsit, and meatballs. What I love the most is that the noodle is super light, and the flavor really bangs inside your mouth. All of the elements are blend so well.

Siomay Goreng

Usually I prefer fried siomay rather than the baked one. However, I think for Mie Jagaraga, the baked one is better than the fried one. Taste okay, but not really my kind of fried siomay.
Es Puding

If you’re a dessert lover, then this ice pudding could be a choice when eating here. Even though the flavor is not there – I could only taste a plain ice, but it has a very great chocolate pudding. Maybe it’s better for them to change the menu become chocolate pudding – and maybe with some fla!
Service

The owner, who’s a middle-aged Chinese Lady cook the noodle for us. So yes, it’s a very nice service. However, the waitress there forgets our order. For example, when I order the Ice Pudding, she forget it until I ask “Where’s my ice pudding?” Well, maybe the place just open (it’s like 10 a.m on the morning) that’s why they’re not ready.
Ambiance

This place is super small, only fit up to 15 – 20 people max, so the ambiance is so-so. I could say that this is the right place if you really want to enjoy the food only, without paying attention to the design, or maybe the plate types.
Stay awake for another food journey!

I’ve known Depot Hongkong since I was a little kid. Maybe around age 5? Yes, a very small little kid. It was also an unforgettable experience since I was wrong using their chopsticks! I used the bottom part instead, to eat my noodle. Well... a bit embarrassing right?
Beside that unforgettable moments, I also couldn’t forget the “BANG” flavor of Depot Hongkong’s dish. Especially the one with pork meat. Yes, this is a non-halal restaurants, but you still could order chicken or even a plain fried rice here.

It’s been a long time since the last time I ate here, that’s why we decided to stop by and enjoy some lunch at Depot Hongkong.
Nasi Goreng Spesial

One of my favorite menus here is definitely the fried rice. Not only because of it has a super huge portion, but the taste is like... super yum! I think no words could express the deliciousness of this fried rice. Plus, there are bunch of pork meat inside (cashiew) which makes it even better. I’d recommend you to share this dish with a friend.
Koloke

If you also think like me, then fried rice alone will not enough and there must be another savory dish to enjoy with. Then, my choice goes to the Koloke. They’re also famous with their Koloke. But, if you only love chicken fillet (means whole chicken breast without any fat, or even the skin) then you won’t like the Koloke.
However, if your taste also same like me, who loves to eat fat, chicken skin, and other things like that, then you’ll definitely love the Koloke! It’s kind of chewy but delicious. Couldn’t stop eating it!
Service
This place is like a traditional chinese food restaurants, where there’s still no system, and don’t expect a 5 star attitude from the waiter. They’ll only take your order, then cook it. It’s all fine with me, as long as they give a delicious food!
Ambiance

I think it needs a make over in some part. Especially the outer restaurant, where it looks like the restaurant is going to fall apart – sorry -. It’s really represent an old traditional Chinese restaurant.
Stay awake for another food journey!

Who knows that Surabaya also has this old style café, located inside a hospital in Darmo Area? Honestly, I also don’t know about this Darmo Heerlijk café until one day I heard a radio channel, announcing this café plus having an interview with the owner. It’s been a long time, like about 2 years ago, and I just had the time to visit this café when visiting my friends inside the hospital.

As you can predict from the name, this café is trying to bring back old memories, especially back then from the Dutch era. We could also see that through the walls that it has all the memories from the before 90s.

Nasi Goreng Ika – IDR 20,000

Ika here means ikan asin. The portion is enough for 1 people, and it’s served with some “Krupuk”, pickles, tomato and cucumber. Taste just fine, nothing wrong with it, but it doesn’t fully satisfy my appetite.
Klapertaart – IDR 13,000

Klapertaart is one of my favorite Dutch snack / dessert. The ones that Heerlijk has is okay, but the taste should be stronger than that.
Milkshake Vanilla – IDR 18,000

If you have doubt what to order, then order milkshake. Because the taste will be really great and super milky! It’s refreshing – even though doesn’t really match with the fried rice.

I think this place is great if you happened to visit your friends / families in the hospital (just like me) or if you’re curious enough to know a bit of Indonesia history.
Service

Even though there aren’t many people there, but the waiter is not that attentive. The service kinda slow, and we need to approach the cashier or the front reception to ask around before they’re going to our table.
Ambiance

I expect it will be having a nice ambiance, with a proper lights and more oldies stuffs, but no, they don’t have anything like that. However, on the bright side, you could know just a glance about the Dutch Era and the old Indonesia building through the pictures there.
I also love to see the old money – I have some at home, too! – and it’s really unique, something that I’ve never seen before. The owner must have think the concept really deep. However, I still think this small, unique café needs some more touch to become better.
Stay awake for another food journey!
