After strolling around Batu City for a day, then we decided to go into Malang city, only to have lunch. Basically, I don’t think Malang has any nature site to visit. The famous area in Malang is Alun-alun, and only the food. Well, CMIIW. The famous street to eat in Malang is near Jalan Kawi Atas. Along the street, you could find many local restaurants with a great flavor.

We park our car at the beginning of the street – because it’s just too crowded – then start to walk. We see that there’s a very long queue in front of this Nasi Bhuk stall. That’s why, we straightly join the queue and look for a sit inside.
Nasi Bhuk : Tempe, Peyek, Serundeng, Sayuran, Nangka, Sambal
When you order 1 portion of nasi Bhuk, then you’ll automatically get all of those 6 elements I mention above. The taste is already delicious, savory, and complete. If you don’t like nangka, for example – just like me – then just tell the waiter that you don’t want that. Then, you just need to choose other dish you’d like to eat with.
Nasi Bhuk 1 – Sate daging

Trust me, that satay is super big in portion and full of meat, without any of its fat. However, for me it’s kinda hard to chew.
Nasi Bhuk 2 - Empal

Empal is one of my favorite meal on earth. In this place, the size of the empal is super huge, I think they served all big portion for their meal, and it’s tender and easy to chew. A great choice for you Nasi Bhuk, indeed.
Es Cendol

To refresh myself, I choose to order es cendol. However, it doesn’t meet my expectation. I think the cendol is lacking in terms of flavor. Maybe I should have just ordered Ice Tea instead.
Service

It’s a self-service restaurant. So you need to look for a place to sit by youself, then join the queue. You could choose what you want to eat based on the choices provided, so feel free to choose! Then, you need to take your order by yourself to the table. After eating, you’ll need to approach one of the waiter there, and calculates the total of what you’ve eaten.
Ambiance

The restaurant is small and super crowded, especially on lunch time. It’s kinda hot too, because no air conditioner here. This place is design only to have a quick lunch.
Stay awake for another food journey!

Bakpao Telo : All Made From Yam OK Aug 25, 2015

Who said that highway doesn’t have anything to try and to eat? Well, if you’re going to Malang or Batu city, using the highway – well honestly, I think that’s the only way to go there from Surabaya – then you must pass Bakpao Telo, a very famous place to buy some bakpao or snacks – all made from yam (“Ketela”) - for your loved ones at home.

This place is really huge and a great place for rest area. If you feel tired after driving a long way from Surabaya, you might want to stop here for a while. Bakpao Telo also has this small restaurants where you could order light bite and drink your cup of coffee or hot tea.
Es Krim Telo

Yam Ice Cream? Hmm.. I bet you just heard this right now, right? Even though it’s made from yam, it still have the sweet taste and it’s kinda good, actually. This ice cream melts really fast, so you need to eat it fast too! Refreshing choice in a hot summer day.
Kue Mangkok Telo

This is my mom’s favorite. She loves everything with yam, and this kue mangkok taste good. I wish the texture softer, though. Not bad for an afternoon snack.
Bakpao Telo

The famous one here is the bakpao. Made from yam, you could choose varieties of the fillings starting from cheese until milk. Taste like any regular bakpao, the difference is only located on the yam flavor.
Service

It’s all self service. So you need to find your own table by yourself, then after that you need to approach the waiter and tell what you want to order. Then, wait about 3 – 5 minutes there, as she’ll prepare the coffee and pour some hot water, and finally you could bring it to your seat. Oh yes, don’t forget to pay, the cashier desk is next to the drink & ice cream stall.
Ambiance

It doesn’t have any air-conditioner, and kinda hot. Thankfully, the restaurant is an open air, that’s why you could still feel the wind from outside. They have this rounded chair with back rest, and you can take a very short nap there.
Stay awake for another food journey!

People usually come to Alun-Alun Batu on the evening until night, where you could find some night market and also child’s game, and some mouthwatering street food. However, if you want to try fresh milk cow, then you need to go here very early in the morning.

Fresh cow milk is really famous in Batu. Since this is the place for stockbreeding and farming area. The famous one in Batu is Depot Susu Ganesha, and it’s also located around Alun-Alun Batu area. Yup, you could say that Alun-alun Batu is the heart of this city. Depot Susu Ganesha sold out pretty fast even though they have bunch of fresh stock every morning, so make sure you don’t miss that!
Susu Sapi Nandhi Murni

Actually, they’ve lots of flavor for their milk, starting from Strawberry, Chocolate, Vanilla, Melon, and any other. They served their milk hot and cold, you could choose. Not only that, they also served Yoghurt. Honestly, I never tried their Yoghurt, so I couldn’t tell you how it taste like.

My favorite of course their fresh, cold cow milk, Vanilla Flavor. It taste super yummy, sweet, and I don’t know – I just can’t resist it! They don’t use any preservatives, so you need to consume their milk fast. Plus, these milks need to be put inside refrigerator all time – unless you’re going with a car, then it’s still fine – so it’ll still be fresh when you drink it.
If you don’t really like milk, they also served some traditional snack like Pastel, lumpia goreng, and lots of any other snacks.
Service

You’ll need to form a long line, and when you arrived near the cashier desk, there’ll be one worker there that will take your order. I think it’s pretty organized, since you won’t and can’t cut the queue. That’s why, to make the service fast, think about what you want to order from the moment you enter the queue (you can look at their menus on the wall).
Ambiance
This place is super small, and if there are queues, then I think it’s almost impossible for you to sit and enjoy your milk inside the restaurants. Too crowded and too much noise! This is also not a café where you could sit around, have a talk and just enjoy your time. If you want to do this, I suggest you take home the milk and enjoy it at home, hahaha.
Stay awake for another food journey!

Frankly said, people love to tell you it’s located on Malang instead of Batu. Yes, Batu is only a small town and located so close to Malang city, that’s why lots of people prefer to say it’s in Malang. If you’re going to Batu area, then you need to try the restaurants around Alun-Alun Batu ( the most famous place in Batu, everyone know where it is ).
We’re just arrived in Batu, to go to some of the recreational places there, and we’re super starving! That’s why, rather than eating in places that we don’t know for sure whether the food is delicious or not, we decided to have our first lunch in Ayam Goreng Pemuda. AGP is really famous throughout Surabaya, and I usually eat there when I was visiting Batu. The location is just in front of Alun-Alun Batu, on the big street.
Ayam Goreng 1 Ekor

No wonder that this place is so legendary. The fried chicken taste really delicious and fell of the bone easily. They also use Ayam Kampung, that is a little bit healthier than the usual Chicken. Somehow, the chicken taste a bit sweet, but that’s why it’s super flavorful.

You’ll also get Lalapan as the side, plus chili mix with ketchup. If you don’t like ketchup just like me, then you might want to ask for chili only. Yumm, it’s really great!
Sambal Terasi

If you think that the chili is not enough and want to try another chili, then try sambal terasi. It’s super savory, taste hot, and delicious to eat with Lalapan. I just wish the rice is warmer though.
Service

The restaurant is not that big, but it’s crowded with people from outside city. Of course, mainly from Surabaya (looking from their car number). The waiter is super attentive and take our order really fast. The owner will fry the chicken for us, which is really nice.
Ambiance

Because this place is somehow directly facing the sun, the interior is a bit dark (you know, like a backlight). It still fine though, because we still could enjoying our food. It’s more to a family restaurant, where you could enjoy your afternoon talk over delicious chicken!
